Inspection of Crane Line Brake Pedal Locks
Recently there have been a
number of reported incidents of brake pedal lock failures. Load lines have
released due to the inability of the locking system to properly engage. As a
normal course of action it is recommended that all cranes working in the marine
and pile driving industry should be inspected for faulty or worn pedal locking
parts.
The operator should visually inspect the pedal lock
swivel, the pedal latch and the amount of play in the pedal lock pin. If there
is signs of metal stress or uneven wear the parts should be replaced as soon as
possible. If there is an excess amount of lateral play in the pedal pin, the
system should be replaced. Any operator assigned to a new crane should as part
of his routine inspection review the condition of the pedal lock and related
parts.
In the marine and pile driving industry it is common
practice to utilize 3 hoisting lines at the same time. A brake pedal failure
could result in extensive equipment damage and injury to workers. A 5 minute
inspection could identify a serious problem could prevent a costly incident.
Remember to work safely, an employee must be aware of the
Risks associated with every task. Risk is neutralized when an employee ASSESSES
the risk, IDENTIES the hazard and implements the necessary CONTROLS.
